This supervision is carried out by the Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic. They can identify vehicles and check whether you have a valid electronic vignette or whether your vehicle is exempt from the obligation.
How do these checks work?
Directly on the toll sections of motorways and they are carried out through various methods, using camera systems that reliably recognise the vehicle registration mark.
What is the amount of the fine?
Have you been caught using a motorway section without a valid electronic vignette and are not exempt? The fines range up to CZK 20,000.
Checks also include detection of abuse of the exemption with fines of up to CZK 100,000.
How are photographs and data handled?
Photographs of vehicles that are not fitted with a valid electronic vignette or are not exempt are taken and the data from them is stored for a certain period. These data and photographs may be requested for possible administrative proceedings. After the specified retention period, these photographs are automatically deleted.
Am I obliged to take out a vignette?
If your vehicle is a motor vehicle with at least four wheels and has a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, you are obliged to obtain an electronic vignette before entering a toll motorway.
However, there are vehicles that are exempt from this obligation. These include motorcycles and trailers. For these categories of vehicles, it is not necessary to obtain an electronic vignette.

Electronic vignette 2024
New price of vignettes
The new year has brought many changes on the Czech motorways, one of which is the adjustment of motorway toll prices. From March 2024, the price of the annual vignette will increase to CZK 2,500. This increase is a result of the rise in inflation and the fact that the price of vignettes has remained unchanged for the last 10 years. Other types of vignettes have either become slightly cheaper or have remained unchanged.
Zero CO₂ vehicles
A positive development in 2024 is that vehicles powered solely by electricity or hydrogen will be exempt from the requirement to purchase vignettes. These vehicles will be automatically registered thanks to the special registration plates they will receive. Owners of vehicles with zero CO₂ emissions will be eligible for this exemption.
Discounted fuels
Standard fuels
The prices of vignettes for vehicles powered by conventional fuels such as petrol or diesel are the standard prices. An annual vignette for these vehicles costs CZK 2,500, which is the standard price for unlimited access to motorways all year round.
Alternative fuels
For vehicles powered by alternative fuels such as natural gas (CNG, LNG, Biomethane), discounted vignette prices apply. The annual electronic vignette for these vehicles costs only CZK 1,350, which is half the price of the vignette for vehicles with conventional fuels. This discounted price reflects efforts to promote greener alternatives for vehicle propulsion.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles
For low CO₂ emitting vehicles such as plug-in hybrids (with maximum emissions of 50 g/km), even lower vignette prices apply. The annual electronic vignette for these vehicles costs only CZK 770. This price reflects efforts to promote greener vehicle propulsion alternatives and to encourage the use of low-emission hybrid vehicles.
Electric cars
For pure electric vehicles, using motorways is even more advantageous as the cost of motorway vignettes is completely free for them. This advantage reflects a desire to promote the use of electric vehicles as an environmentally friendly alternative to fuel-powered vehicles and to encourage a switch to cleaner modes of transport.
News
Driving 150km/h
An impending change to the Czech Republic’s traffic regulations has announced a planned increase in the maximum speed limit on motorways. Under the new proposal, drivers could soon be allowed to drive at speeds of up to 150km/h, up from the current 130km/h. This anticipated change should bring greater comfort and efficiency when travelling on the Czech Republic’s motorways.
Driving without a licence
A new option is coming to dispense with the physical carrier of a driving licence when travelling in the Czech Republic. Thanks to the eDoklady app, it is now possible to have your driving licence stored directly on your mobile device. You just need to have the eDoklady mobile app installed and your driving licence loaded into the system. This move brings greater convenience and practicality for drivers, who do not need to always carry their physical licence with them but can have it available on their smartphone at any time.

Toll gates
Toll gates are used in some EU countries to pay for motorway use. In France, for example, toll gates are a common way of paying for motorway use. Drivers pass through gates where they pay either in cash or through electronic payment systems. A similar system exists in Italy, where toll gates are located at the entrance and exit of motorways.
Motorway vignettes
In Austria and Switzerland, vignettes are a common way of paying for motorway use. Drivers must have a valid vignette, which they purchase either at border crossing points or at points of sale. This stamp is placed on the windscreen of the vehicle and is valid for a certain period, for example 10 days or 1 year, depending on the type of stamp purchased.
Electronic toll gates
Some EU countries, such as Germany and Slovakia, have electronic toll systems in place. Drivers have a special electronic device on their vehicles that automatically identifies the vehicle when it passes through a toll gate. Charges are then automatically deducted from the subscription or account associated with the electronic device. This system allows for smooth passage without stopping at toll gates.
